Meet the BMW i4

Following the success of the i3, BMW will launch a new saloon model called the ‘i4’.

The i4 is set to arrive in 2021, battling the Tesla Model 3 for best compact executive car. The new model will be reminiscent of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, featuring the same popular 4-door setup in a zero-emission package.

As is the case with most electric cars, the i4 will be sporting some serious power. It is expected that the car will offer a maximum of 530bhp – the equivalent of a V8 petrol engine. Whilst utilising the full power available will significantly decrease range, economical driving should return just shy of 380 miles on a full charge.

When compared to the top-spec Tesla Model 3 Performance, which boasts 449bhp and 329 miles of range, the i4 looks to be a very competitive vehicle, although basic pricing is yet to be announced. However, the Model 3’s 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds bests the i4’s 4 second time.

When it comes to charging, the i4 doesn’t wait around – if you have access to a 150kW charger, that is. It can charge 80% of the car’s battery in around 35 minutes, and for 60 miles of range, this can be achieved in 6 minutes.

BMW also mentions that their new iX3 is set to debut next year, no doubt based on the current X3 SUV.
